L.A.X, whose real name isDamilola Afolabi, is one of the fast rising musicians on the Nigerian entertainment scene. The young man caught the attention of the media after working with Wizkidon the hit singles, ‘Caro’ and ‘Ginger’.
L.A.X’s whose first major single is titled ‘Jaye’ featuring Chocolate City rapper, Ice Prince is signed toWizkid’sStarboy Recordsin 2013. In this interview with NET, the young star talks about the release of his debut album, the seemingly unending controversy surrounding Wizkid, his plans to have his own record label and more.
Tell about your recently release video, ‘Morenike’
The video was shot by Clarence Peters, I was supposed to release it on the 14thof February but when I played the song for him, he told me we would shoot a quality video for the song, so we went back and forth to sit down and draw out the strategic plans for the video which was shot in three locations in Lagos.
What was the reception like after your debut with the song, ‘Caro’?
Immediately I dropped ‘Caro’, I went back to school to round up my undergraduate programmes, and after ‘Ginger’ also, I went back to finish my Master’s Degree, so I wasn’t really in Nigeria then but when I perform at shows in UK, people always like the song, but now that I’m fully back to Nigeria, I hope they will receive me and my music.
What are your plans for your debut album?
For now, I have close to 40 – 5o songs recorded already, I work for like almost everyday. I and my management spoke about when am suppose to release my album, and we are looking at early next year in January/February 2016.
Do you have a title for the album yet?
No, actually I have a lot of titles for the album but I haven’t decided yet.
How many singles do you plan to drop before your debut album?
I’m planning to drop four singles, if possible, more.
Despite your educational background, don’t you feel you are underrated by being signed to Wizkid’s label?
First and foremost, when you are looking at music business, what you should look out for is experience, Wizkid has the experience, he has been grinding from young. When you talk about contract, he is smarter, but looking at me to some extent, I will love to own a record label but you have to start from somewhere before getting to a certain place and I’m still in that process. And it’s not like I’m leaving Wiz, I can decide to work with him for ever but I would like to have my own label.
How would you describe your relationship with Wizkid?
I think, when I first met him, we were trying to get to know each other, we travelled everywhere together, performed at different show, we had the biggest joint then, ‘Caro’ but now he really wants me to grow. Because he wants me to have my own brand, he wants the industry to know me as L.A.X, that is why most times we perform differently but relationship wise, we are actually very cool.
Wizkid is very controversial; do you think you can cope with his style and attitude?
To be honest, Wizkid is a very nice person, what you see outside is actually the opposite of what you see inside, but honestly he is cool.
What do think about Wizkid and Skales Twitter fight?
I said I don’t really have much to say but the night before the diss, we were actually together drinking, I don’t think it’s something that has been going on that nobody knows. I don’t think I have a say in it.
Why do you think Wizkid is always quick to start a social media fight?
To me, Wizkid is confident, he doesn’t like to be dragged to the mood, who knows but definitely you might find Wizkid and Skalesworking together, I’m sure about that.
So what collaborations do we expect from you this year?
I’m just planning to work on myself, I have done ‘Caro’ and ‘Ginger’ with Wizkid, so for now I want to actually show people what I can do on my own, if anybody wants to work with me, fine but for now I’m focusing on myself. At the right time, I will like to work with Olamide.
Which of the female celebrities are you crushing on?
Yes I have a lot, I love Cynthia Morgan, I think her music is amazing but I like Chidinma very much, I like them small but nice looking.
